Rachel Osofsky Graduates from Carleton College

Rachel Osofsky received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics , magna cum laude, from Carleton College during its 139th Commencement ceremony, held on Saturday, June 15.

Osofskyis the daughter of James Osofsky of Northampton, MA and Suzy Silverstein of Northampton, MA.

Two seniors spoke at the ceremony. Charlie Bentley, a linguistics major from Springfield, Mo., presented a speech entitled "The Problems That Don't Yet Exist." Chloe Zelkha, a religion major from Woodside, Calif., gave a speech entitled "Try."

Carleton also presented two honorary degrees during the commencement ceremony. Bruce Alberts, a professor of biochemistry at the University of California at San Francisco, is the editor-in-chief of the academic journal Science and one of President Obama's first three Science Envoys. Alberts was awarded the degree Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Michael S. Harper, a professor of English at Brown University and poet laureate emeritus of Rhode Island was awarded the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Both Alberts and Harper briefly addressed the graduating class, as did Carleton College's eleventh president, Steven Poskanzer.
